Johnson was born on August 14, 1959, in Lansing, Michigan. He grew up in a large family of 9 brothers and sisters. His full name is Earvin Johnson Jr but he got his nickname “Magic” after a sportswriter witnessed him put up 36 points, 16 rebounds and 16 assists in a single high school game at the age of 15.
